Fifth Graders Now!

It happened this afternoon. Our 2012-2013 students became fifth graders!

Twenty-four hours earlier, their teacher went home worried that this annual milestone was many weeks away. We had been working on our first little research paper, a challenging task for new fifth graders. We use lots of technology tools in our grade level, and many children struggle to master all the new routines and procedures at first. Many went home yesterday without their usual happy faces.

Today, though, everything changed. As you can see from the snapshots, students were hard at work. The difference was that they "got it", and they applied their new understanding to the tasks at hand. And they made significant progress.

Some announced as they walked in the door this morning, "I finished my 10 notecards last night!" It was the proverbial "light went on" experience for many children all at once, and it was exciting for all of us to see and experience together!

The teacher announced at closing prayer time, "Congratulations! Today you became fifth graders!" Everyone cheered. Some announced, "I feel taller!" It was a great way to end the day! And it's not even Friday yet!
