  • food chain - the path of energy in food from one organism to another
  • food web - the overlapping food chains in a community
  • herbivore - an animal that eats only plants
  • carnivore - an animal that eats only other animals
  • predator - a living thing that hunts other living things for food
  • prey - a living thing that is hunted for food
  • scavenger - an animal that feeds on the remains of dead animals
  • omnivore - an animal that eats both plants and animals
  • Sun - the original source of energy in an ecosystem

CLOZE Test Vocab
  • producers - use the Sun's energy to make their own food (examples: plants, grasses and trees)
  • hunt - predators hunt other living things called prey for food
  • consumers - organisms that cannot make their own food
  • overlap - many small food chains in an ecosystem overlap each other
  • web - the overlapping of food chains creates a food web
  • decomposers
  • the Sun - producers rely on the Sun for energy
  • decomposers - break down dead matter into substances that can be used by producers
